Residence Permits

Residence and settlement permits are issued by the cantonal foreign police authorities for a limited period. It is therefore important to renew your permit before it expires, but no earlier than two months before its expiry date.

As a rule, the cantonal authorities send a notice to all holders of a settlement or residence permit that is about to expire, inviting them to take the necessary steps to extend their permit or, if applicable, to report their departure.

It remains the responsibility of the foreign national to ensure that their residence and/or work permit is valid.

In case of uncertainty, it is advisable to contact our office, which will be pleased to provide further information.

If a person is fully or partially supported by a recognised social assistance organisation, they must provide the Population Office with a support certificate both spontaneously and when applying for renewal, in order to request exemption from fees.
